There are many causes of chest pain and, if you’ve had the nasty ones ruled out, but you are still getting bouts of chest pain it is very likely the cause is musculoskeletal -which is great news. In cases like this, a couple of chiropractic adjustments to the specific joints causing the issues can often sort the problem out for you.

Let’s have a look at the anatomy. There are 12 ribs that attach either side of the spine - any one of these can be contributing to your pain. If the issue is coming from the rib attachments it often hurts to take a deep breath, cough or sneeze when it is inflamed.

Abnormal movement in the discs between each vertebra can also cause issues and are often associated with that deep pain that feels like you are being stabbed.

The facet joints often cause really sharp pain particularly if you twist.

There are also the cartilaginous ‘joints’ at the front - where the ribs attach to the sternum or breast bone. These can also become inflamed and cause significant pain. If this is the cause there can be a tender lump or lumps when you poke around this area. This often starts after a chest infection or a lot of coughing.

These are not the only causes of chest pain however these are things that commonly cause chest and rib pain, pain or catching when you breathe deep or even chest tightness and a feeling of shortness of breath.
